What You Need to Know about Strength Training For Women

Written by Gold's Gym SoCal | 4.14.2019

Some ladies love the look of bulging biceps complimenting the rest of their curves—but it's safe to say many other females want a more toned, slender body style. That's probably why strength training for women often gets overlooked. But lifting isn't just for bodybuilding femme fatales or bros.

Strength training is important for all women! Here's why:

Why Strength Training for Women Matters

Name one woman you know who doesn't need to be strong. We bet you can't. Women work, care for their families and homes and selves, love their tribes, help others, face all the problems life throws their way, and so much more!

All that living demands a lot from the body, and strength training is a necessary part of staying ready to live well because:

  • Strength training allows your muscles to perform everyday activities like bending, lifting, and twisting safely and effectively
  • Lifting or using resistance bands tones and trims your body
  • Your joints and bones will be healthier for it (even in the future)
  • It is actually a great way to lose body fat
  • Strength training can be social, which is motivating for many
  • Your mind and focus is sharpened when you do reps
  • Being able to lift is empowering!

When women who practice strength training are asked why it matters to them, many talk about the new perspective it gives them on their body and how much their muscles support their everyday life. That- and what a confidence booster this type of exercise is!

How to Fit Strength Training Into Your Routine

Another benefit of strength training is how diverse it is. There are so many options. Here's how to fit it into your routine:

• Alternate Days

Strength training breaks down your muscles (to build them back up!) This takes time, so it's best not to do similar strength-based exercises on consecutive days. Alternate days of strength training with days for cardio. Have a "leg" day and an "upper body day."

• Pick Your Equipment

Dumbbells and barbells aren't your only option (although they work if you want to use them.) Equipment for strength training can include resistance bands, kettlebells, machines, and much more.

• Focus on Everyday Muscles First

If your goal is to help your muscles help you in everyday life, functional fitness is a good start. This technique focuses on strength training moves that equip your body for the kinds of strength-based things you have to do naturally. That way you have a healthy muscle base to build on.

• Write Down Your Plan

For independent strength training workouts, you're going to want your plan written down. Otherwise you'll waste time between moves finding the right equipment and deciding which amazing strength training exercises to do next.
